Design Patterns in Clubs At Manoa Project

In our Clubs At Manoa project, we extensively utilized the Singleton design pattern, which falls under the Creational category. The Singleton pattern ensures that a class has only one instance and provides a global point of access to it. This is particularly useful in managing connections to a database or ensuring that the state of a complex object is consistent throughout the application.

For example, our MongoDB collections, such as Clubs, Profiles, and Interests, are instantiated once and reused throughout the application, which is typical of the Singleton pattern in JavaScript. We define the Clubs collection with the line:

export const Clubs = new Mongo.Collection('clubs');

in a dedicated module. This approach ensures that the collection is created only once and is accessible throughout the application via imports. This single instance’s use across various parts of our system ensures data consistency and integrity. It prevents discrepancies and centralizes the management of the collection’s schema and operations. For instance, operations such as inserts, updates, and deletions are managed centrally, reducing the risk of errors or inconsistencies that could arise from having multiple instances of the same collection.

This practical application of the Singleton pattern within the Clubs At Manoa project highlights how design patterns can significantly enhance software development practices by providing a structured approach to solving common problems. By ensuring that there is a single, consistent instance of each collection, we maintain a clean and efficient codebase, reduce the risk of data anomalies, and improve the overall reliability of the application.
